i find .net totally useless. the only software i ever use that needs it is turbotax and that's only one week out of the year, if that. i just happen to like turbotax, what can i say. after my tax filing is done this bloatware gets uninstalled pronto. any other software i might try to install that requires .net gets appropriately cancelled. there's plenty of other software alternatives out there that don't require this mess being on your system, including all the endless security updates/service packs that come with it.update: i also forgot that starting with version 4, ms .net starts an ngen service automatically that slows down pc boot time considerably, particularly your lan connection. very frustrating. yes, it can be disabled in services, however, with each new update to .net 4.x(which seems to come every couple of months), the service gets set to automatic again. that's even more frustrating.@zoroasteri've come across that too... a software installer that was very, very small in size but was wanting to install that .net behemoth for it to work. that's just totally ridiculous.

works excellent. it doesn't do quite as much as ws_ping_propack - but this thing is free and has all the features that you'd really want. (for example, ws_ping_propack has a 'finger' utility - but how often do you really need that?)plus - this has a built in ports table - something that ws_print_propack does not have.anyway i give this one a 5. good job.

webroot secureanywhere beats this hands down - totally cloud based & a billion times smaller - you can also control all pc's protected with it including mobiles.@dark wizard - webroot secureanywhere is based on the prevx engine which has been first class for years, it wasn't dreamed up yesterday.those are your opinions you posted not 'fact' - typing 'period' after a sentence does not increase the validity of your review - it depends greatly on which av reviews you read to be honest - you are entitled to your opinion but having used just about every av on the planet since f-prot for dos i think you are quite wrong - my opinions are as valid as yours or anyones. the kaspersky firewall was easily taken out for years though it seems they may have finally got their act together on that one but only recently.i assume you have used secureanywhere? or is your opinion based on reviews your read or limited personal experience - cloud based is the way forward - remember you read that >here<as for bitdefender it has the greatest fp's on earth & has had for years - that is frankly a piece of junk. if you want a local sig based av use 'eset'and i don't smoke.@mmondry - if you are stupid enough to download illegal 'cracks' you deserve all you get & more - i stand by my review & time will tell - i also use malwarebytes along with trojan remover, if you really think 'any' av will save you from the lack of safe surfing you are mistaken -as for your - '1 - 5 av comparison test' - you obviously have no idea how webroot actually works - i suggest you read up on that - as for your point no. '5' - you seem some kind of beginner to pc's & it's obviously not your employment!the best form of av is to use a linux derivative - some intelligence is required though ;-) and for the record have you actually installed ' kaspersky total security ' ?

nice free program that does the job for my needs. i like the fact that you can be completely explicit about which folders it should index. most of these types of programs seem to force you to index the start menu, which i don't want. i can search the start menu with vista by pressing one key. but with this you can make a folder of your custom shortcuts and have it search that folder only, which is exactly what i want.the "approximate search" mode also does a very good job of finding stuff even if you make a typo or type just a few random letters. plus it has a little list of a few lines showing the bes tmatches, so if you really screw up you can just hit down then enter to go to the second match or whatever. also you can completely turn off automatic indexing so it will only index on startup or when you right click and tell it to do so.it has a bunch of stuff for website shortcuts and all that too which honestly i have no use for so i don't know how well all that works. but it is there.overall, pretty basic-looking (who cares if your launcher has a drop shadow really) but does everything i want and does it well. switched over to this from launchy a couple of years ago and haven't missed it, no real complaints.
